“Sarah’s Cause For Paws” held at Hickories Park in Owego this past Saturday, Oct. 7, was a huge success. In all, a total of $11,250 was raised with monies going to Tioga County’s Stray Haven Humane Society & SPCA, $1,000 to the Baltimore Humane Society and $250 to the Florida Keys SPCA.
Last week, a check for $10,000 was presented to Stray Haven (celebrating their 50th year serving Tioga County, N.Y. and the Greater Valley of Pennsylvania).
The Orton family to memorialize the life of their five-year-old daughter, Sarah, created the Sarah Jayne Orton Memorial Foundation. Sarah Jayne loved all animals and lived her short life doing all she could to help and care for them.
For her fifth birthday, Sarah specifically asked that all birthday gifts be given as donations to Baltimore Humane Society, the shelter where her own dog, Scooter, had been adopted before Sarah was even born. This selfless little girl felt she had all she needed — a loving family and warm home. For her, the best birthday gift you could give was one that helped the homeless animals.
Sadly, Sarah passed away suddenly due to sepsis on Oct. 10 of 2013, just a few months after her fifth birthday. To honor this sweet little girl’s life, the Sarah Jayne Orton Memorial Foundation was created. On her birthday, Oct. 10, the donation to Stray Haven was made, appropriately.
