Tioga Women Lead celebrates one-year anniversary at Pumpelly House Estate

Almost one year to the day after their first event, the Tioga Women Lead (TWL) Council invites local women to the Pumpelly House Estate for a program called “Be Your Own Hero.” The event will take place on Oct. 25.

The TWL Council is a group of seven Tioga County women from various personal and professional backgrounds that came together to provide a platform to educate, support, and advance women leaders in Tioga County. Smart and strong leadership is essential to successful and sustained economic and community development.

Tioga Women Lead provides the tools and network to assist women with effectual leadership in their profession and community, while inspiring and guiding future leaders. They organized their first event that took place in October of 2017 at Pheasant Hill and brought together over 60 local women to learn about and discuss the topic of integrity from Penny Bartlow, business owner and founder of Global Women Now, a youth leadership program.

It was at this first event that the TWL Council presented the first “You Rock” Award to Lindsay Fields, who was 17 at the time and had just broken the World Record in the dead lift for her age and weight class in a world-sanctioned power lifting event. The You Rock Award is presented to a Tioga County woman who has achieved a distinct accomplishment. It is recognition of the hard work and persistence of a woman who has reached a goal, and a celebration of her personal journey toward success. The award itself is a rock that is hand-painted by another local woman.

The TWL Council chose rocks as a symbol of their group because each rock is different and the marks they bear tell the story of their journey. Like rocks, every woman’s journey toward success is different and her unique experiences shape who she is. Members of the TWL Council have presented five “You Rock” Awards, including one to Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul when she visited Tioga County to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage in New York State.

TWL’s fifth event will be held at the Pumpelly House Estate, 44 Front St. in Owego on Oct. 25. Jo Whitney, MA, PCC, will present “Be Your Own Hero,” a program that will encourage women to discover their own superpower when dealing with obstacles in life.

Check-in and cocktail hour begins at 5 p.m. and the program begins at 6 p.m. The cost is $20 per person and includes hors d’oeuvres.

To register, contact the Tioga County Chamber of Commerce at (607) 687-2020, business@tiogachamber.com, or stop in at 80 North Ave., Owego. Please register by Oct. 18.
