Literacy Volunteers of Broome-Tioga to celebrate 50 years

Since 1967, Literacy Volunteers of Broome-Tioga Counties (LVBTC) has helped adults in the community build brighter futures for themselves and their families. To recognize their 50th anniversary milestone, the organization will host the “Literacy Lights the Way” Gala on Oct. 21, at the American Legion Post 89 in Vestal.

The event begins at 1:30 p.m. and features a buffet luncheon, motivational speaker and author Craig Boykin, and a program that highlights the organization’s achievements.

“Fifty years ago, Literacy Volunteers of Broome-Tioga Counties joined what would soon become a nationwide initiative to help improve the literacy and basic skills of adults,” said Kristen Gordon-Pier, executive director of LVBTC. “We have served thousands of adults and helped build literacy in Broome and Tioga Counties.”
