New basketball program in Owego-Apalachin is open for registration

Registration is now open for a brand new basketball program in Owego-Apalachin. The Owego-Apalachin Basketball Club (OABC) is proud to announce that they have opened online registration for their inaugural season at www.oabasketballclub.com.

They will offer a Travel Basketball Program for fourth through sixth grade boys and girls who attend or reside full-time within the Owego-Apalachin Central School District. The OABC is governed by a Board of Directors lead by President and Treasurer Tom Bronk, Vice President Dan Tavelli, Secretary Anne Smith, Boy’s Basketball Chairperson Chris Evans and Girl’s Basketball Chairperson Luke McEvoy.

The OABC will practice and play games at gymnasiums throughout the Owego-Apalachin Central School District thanks to the generosity of the Owego-Apalachin Athletic Department and Athletic Director Andy Buchsbaum. Their Travel Basketball program offers competitive and developmental levels of play for boys and girls. Tryouts will be held around the third week of October. The season runs from the beginning of November until the end of February and consists of 16 regular season games against teams from around the Southern Tier.

All Travel Basketball coaches will be required to obtain an AAU membership, which will include a background check. There will also be scholarship opportunities available, so that any child can play regardless of their financial situation.

The OABC plans to offer fundraising opportunities and several local businesses have already become sponsors. Michelle McLaren Photography will take team pictures at the beginning of the season.

There will also be an AAU Basketball Program available mid-February for fourth through twelfth grade boys and girls and is open to anyone regardless of their school district.

The Owego-Apalachin Basketball Club is a non-profit organization.

President Tom Bronk stated, “This is a very exciting time for the Owego-Apalachin Basketball Club. It is great to see all the interest and support from our community and how much love there is for the game of basketball. We are proud to be able to offer these great programs to the youth of Owego-Apalachin.”

The OABC players will be known as “The Tribe”, which pays tribute to the OFA Indian’s mascot. Varsity coaches Chris Evans and Luke McEvoy, along with some of their varsity players, plan to work directly with the Travel Basketball Program to provide an educational and fun opportunity for our youth to learn the game of basketball.
