The Catatonk Valley Woodcarvers are holding their 27th Annual Woodcarvers Show and Sale at the Candor Fire Hall on Rt. 96B in Candor on Saturday and Sunday, and during Candor’s Fall Festival of Events. The woodcarvers not only display their handcrafted items, many sell them as well.

Sixty strong, the Catatonk Valley Wood Carvers’ membership comes from Tioga, Broome, Tompkins, Corning and Chemung Counties, as well as several from Pennsylvania. Meetings are held in the Candor Library every Monday night from 7-9 p.m. There is always something happening.

“There are always hands-on projects,” said Randy Conner.

He added, “Various members share their expertise and techniques on carving specific details on caricatures, realistic birds or relief artwork, as well as painting techniques and the use of special tools. Everyone has something to share and learn at the meetings. On occasion the group hires an outside professional carver to give a weekend long carving class.”

Several members attend and compete at carving shows throughout New York and neighboring states. A few have competed and won awards at the world and international level. Many of these art shows are juried, which means one has to be accepted through a stringent process, including submitting detailed photographs for review.

This year’s show in Candor will be held on Saturday, Oct. 7 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sunday, Oct. 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Approximately 20 individual carvers will display (and sell or commission) their artwork.

On display will be various waterfowl, realistic birds, caricatures, relief carvings, chip and bark carvings. Several special demonstrations will take place throughout the weekend, as well.

Admission is free, however, there are many handcrafted items donated by the members for raffle, including a special silent auction and the annual major raffle.  This year’s item is a hand framed, hand carved wooden quilt with blocks of various historic places or farm scenes – a joint effort by the members. Each block is carved, painted, some used wood burning techniques, and the individual carver signs each block. Be prepared to set aside plenty of time for browsing, chatting, and enjoying the exquisite local craftsmanship.

The Candor Fire Department / Auxiliary will have plenty of food and refreshments on hand for purchase throughout the weekend. For more information, call Randy Conner at (607) 659-4352.
