Town of Berkshire to conduct dog census

Town of Berkshire to conduct dog census

The Town of Berkshire will be performing a door-to-door dog enumeration and census during the months of October and November of 2017. During that time, Berkshire’s Dog Control Officer, Patrick Cartwright, Jr., will be coming to your residence to create an accurate list of all dogs and their owners, and to see that all dogs were properly licensed.

Pursuant to ARTICLE 7 of the Agriculture and Markets Law of the State of New York, as well as Local Town Law, all dogs four months old and over must be licensed and have a current rabies vaccination. New York State Law permits the Town to conduct a door-to-door to conduct the census.

The Town will collect an additional $5.00 surcharge for each dog identified as unlicensed during the enumeration period, in addition to the license fee. The fee to license an unspayed / unneutered dog is $14, and for a spayed / neutered dog it is $7.

Proof of current rabies vaccination (signed certificate not a tag) is required to obtain a license.

Owners of unlicensed dogs will also be issued an appearance ticket for Town Court for harboring an unlicensed dog if found during the enumeration. If you receive a ticket you must still license your dog and pay the enumeration fee. Furthermore, the Town Justice will issue a fine for the appearance ticket.

For further information or to license a dog, contact the Berkshire Town Clerk at (607) 657-8647.
