Abby Driscoll of the Owego Free Academy (OFA) High School has been selected to accompany the USA Athletes International (USAAI) team competing in the Italian Softball Series in Florence, Italy from July 30 to Aug. 8, 2018.

The USAAI team, composed of select athletes from across the country, will travel to Italy to compete in a competitive softball experience against local clubs and National selection teams. Players from all over the country are recommended for the team based on two key elements: (1) their athletic ability and (2) their ability to represent their country, school and hometown in a positive manner.

“Abby is an excellent example of the type of athletic ambassador USA Athletes International seeks to bring into international competition. Abby will bring the term ambassador to life on this trip, showing the other USAAI athletes and our Italian hosts her love for the sport she has had the opportunity to excel in here in the States,” stated Darrell Phipps, office manager and program coordinator at USA Athletes International.

“Ms. Driscoll is taking the opportunity to represent the Owego Free Academy and the Endicott community as an ambassador for the sport of softball and the USA. Abby is definitely making the best of this opportunity and we are all proud to have her as a part of our program.” added Phipps.

In addition to competing, the team will also take plenty of time to tour the host club cities, as well as other culturally and historically significant sites around the Italian Tuscany Region countryside. USA Athletes International is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization that seeks to provide educational opportunities that are facilitated through athletic competition.

With the exception of the U.S. Olympic program, there are few opportunities for athletes to experience the competition, history, and culture of other countries on an international level.
