A 9/11 Memorial Service was held on Monday, and at the site of the Town of Owego’s 9/11 Memorial located in Hickories Park in Owego.
A small handful of guests gathered for the ceremony that welcomed bagpiper Joe Cawley, Apalachin firefighter Will Roden – who was one of 56 local volunteers that deployed to the site of the World Trade Center, Owego Fire Department Police Lieutenant John Hitchings ringing the Firemen’s Bell, and the National Anthem sung by Andrea McBride.
During the ceremony, Town of Owego Deputy Supervisor Dean Morgan remembered Apalachin resident Derek James Statkevicus, who was killed on the 86th floor of World Trade Center’s South Tower. A granite bench at the park is dedicated in his memory.
It was also noted that the latest donation to the monument was a $12,000 check from the Mildred Truman Faulkner Foundation.
