Champion Speedway to host New York State Championship on July 29

Five-time Champion Speedway track champion Adam “The Missile” Mittl made his debut to the 2017 season a successful one as he took home the Speedway Joe Cup at the famed local track on July 15.

The Endicott native, who is sponsored by ARAI Helmets, Scott’s Headers, Justice Bros, Oury Grips and local businesses Tank’s Auto sales and Joe V’s Automotive repair, got the hole shot from the start in the Scratch Main Event that was dedicated to the memory of long-time speedway fan, “Speedway” Joe Hodak of Johnson City, who had passed in recent years, but allowed too much room on the outside coming off turn four of lap one and was passed by Casey Donholt.

Mittl then made a hard charge up the inside of Donholt and very smoothly and fairly moved him over and went by to control the next three laps for the win. Donholt would take 2nd place followed up by Jeremy Parsons of Vestal. Dave Oakden of Rochester was 4th and Jerry Harman of Newark Valley was 5th. Parsons would go on to victory in the evening’s Handicap Main event with Mittl taking 2nd.

The track was in excellent shape for the races and the walls were freshly re-painted white. The venue is gearing up to host the New York State Championships and July 29 and should have a great field of riders. Aug. 12 is the Larry McBride Memorial race and Aug. 26 is dedicated to the Memory of track Legend “Hurricane” Hank Bassett, who lost his battle with MS this winter. On Aug. 27, a celebration of his life and a fun day of riding is planned at the track. Sept. 2 and 3 is the U.S. Open National Championships and it is already being talked about that 7-time AMA US National Champion Billy Janniro from California will be racing.

Champion Speedway ownership has just entered into a deal with a local promoter who is going to re-open the go-kart fun track on site this month, which should be great for the fans and locals looking to have some fun and who will also be promoting mud bogs and dirt go-kart racing at the site. Champion Speedway will be a busy venue in the near future.
