Angels Over Afghanistan and Iraq to hold annual yard sale

The Angels Over Afghanistan and Iraq will be having their annual yard sale on Aug. 11 and 12 at the Owego Elks Lodge located at 223 Front St. in Owego. They are currently accepting clean and nearly new items for this fundraiser, which can be dropped off at 48 Talcott St. in Owego.

New this year will be boxes at the sale to fill with items to send to soldiers. There will also be coloring sheets for children and postcards for adults to leave a message of support that will be included in the boxes shipped out after the sale.

The Angels have been sending care packages to deployed soldiers for over 11 years, and have been able to do it with support from the community. The annual yard sale is their biggest fundraiser.

Angels over Iraq and Afghanistan is a not for profit organization comprised of youth from Tioga County, New York ages eight to 18. The group sends care packages to deployed soldiers stationed overseas that are serving our country.

Donations of items for the care packages are always welcome. Several fundraising events are scheduled during the year to raise funds needed to purchase items for the care packages and to cover shipping costs.

The group was formed in 2006 and to date has shipped over 6.5 tons of boxes valued at approximately $48,000 to more than 1,500 soldiers. The average cost to ship one box is anywhere from $25 to $30, depending on the weight and shipping zone.
