The Tioga United Way is excited to announce that Joseph Yaman, a local gym owner and Strength and Conditioning Coach, is generously supporting the Tioga United Way by hosting a first-of-its-kind fitness challenge on Aug. 12. In addition to raising funds, the event will aim to shed light on the importance of healthy living, and combat obesity.

Yaman is welcoming all members and non-members, ages 10 to 110 years old, for a chance to learn more about functional strength and movements, and an opportunity to be a part of an environment of camaraderie and encouragement. There are three different fitness levels: beginner, intermediate and advanced.

As part of the challenge, each participant will attempt to complete as many rounds as possible (AMRAP) in a 20-minute period of a variety of movement options including sit-ups, squats, planks, nurpees, burpees, kettlebell deadlifts, ring rows, double unders, power cleanse, pull-ups, short distance running and more.

Each participant is encouraged to find friends and family to sponsor their efforts. Prizes will be given to the participant who completes the most rounds for each fitness level, and a prize will also be awarded to the participant who raises the most money.

Yaman teamed up with Owego Police Officer, Tommy Woodburn, to come up with this fun, creative fundraiser.

“Finding a way to give back to the community has been a goal that I have had even before I opened my gym,” Yaman said.  “It’s extremely important to bring friends and family of all ages together to create more awareness of the importance of health and fitness, to better ensure wellness over the longevity of our lives.”

Culligan Water, Confluence Running, Vitamin Shoppe, Joe Yaman’s Automotive, Farmhouse Brewery, and the Owego Police Benevolent Association (PBA) are sponsoring this family-friendly event. Woodburn said the PBA is thrilled at the chance to get involved with a new and exciting fundraising concept.

“As the PBA President, it is my goal to team up with local charities to make a positive impact in the community we love,” Woodburn said. “You see a lot of 5K’s and golf tournaments, but this is a fresh, new fundraising effort that I’m certain will attract even more support for the Tioga United Way partner agencies.”

The registration fee is $20, and complimentary t-shirts will be given to the first 50 registrants. To register, stop by Yeaman’s gym located at 103 Southside Dr. in Owego or visit tiogaunitedway.com. Sponsor Tracker Forms will also be available on their website.

Tioga United Way, Inc. supports 30 partner agencies addressing food insecurity, domestic violence, elder isolation, illiteracy, transportation, along with programs for the disabled, the youth, senior citizens and more.
