Spotlight on the Presidency of Harry Truman at the Spalding Memorial Library

Harry S. Truman was thrust unexpectedly into the U.S. Presidency by the sudden death of Franklin Roosevelt. Yet, Truman’s leadership was pivotal for our nation during a time of war. The positive impacts of many of his political decisions are as long lasting of those of his predecessor.

Explore his legacy at an informative event, happening at the Spalding Memorial Library on Thursday, June 29 at 6:30 p.m. “Truman: From Rebuilding Europe to the Korean Conflict” will be presented by David Fortune as part of the library’s “Build a Better World” summer programming.

Truman began his life on a farm in Missouri. He would go on to a career in politics, but never much imagined he might become president. One of his most famous quotes likens his surprising inauguration to a “load of hay” falling on him.

Truman’s presidency would oversee some of the most dramatic world events of the 20th century. From the Atomic Bomb and the end of WWII, to the founding of the United Nations and the creation of Israel, Truman’s political leadership helped to shape the new post-war world.

Truman would go on to lead the U.S. into the Korean Conflict. During his two terms as president, he faced strong political opposition but nonetheless managed many accomplishments.

You won’t want to miss this opportunity to discover the nuances of Truman’s presidency. For more information, call the library at (570) 888-7117 or stop at in 724 South Main St. in Athens, Pa.
