The Apalachin Library, located at 719 Main St. in Apalachin, N.Y. is in the midst of an exciting construction project this summer. A 20-foot by 60-foot room is being added to their building adjacent to the library Book Barn.

Library Director, Cathy Sorber, explained that the expansion will provide combined space for young adult books, enhanced special programs for all ages, and a larger meeting area for groups and organizations. Extra tables and chairs will be added as will a screen for presentations. As a separate project, a room currently used for storage will be renovated into a second bathroom in the lobby entrance.

“We are focusing on new programs that reintroduce hobbies or other interests,” Sorber commented, adding, “Especially programs that are not associated with electronics.”

A new room addition is underway and should be completed by fall 2017 at the Apalachin Library, located at 719 Main St. in Apalachin, N.Y.

Classes introduced in the future could encompass such topics as painting and drawing, quilting, vegetable gardening, personal finance, family board games, yoga, babysitting, first aid and CPR, yoga and renewable energy, just to name a few. It is Sorber’s thought process to introduce classes that are helpful to individuals of all ages, while building a sense of community and highlighting the importance of family time.

The Apalachin Library has had successful children’s programs and a summer reading program, and has offered ongoing special activities and events. Starting in July, family nights at the library are planned each Thursday, with events featuring music, magic, animals and even a “bubble man.”

The Apalachin Library, part of the Finger Lakes Library System (FLLS), received a grant via the New York State Matching Construction Grant for Libraries. The expansion contractor is Homer C. Gow and Sons, and in addition, Sorber thanks the Mildred Faulkner Truman Foundation for their generous support in funding the library’s new furnace, which experienced difficulties after the grant was already in process.

Sorber invites the public to come and see the work in progress, which is anticipated to be complete by this fall. Within the next two weeks, visitors should see walls going up.

Sorber said, “We’re pleased to be able to give everyone a place with better programs and services, and will continue to utilize taxpayer dollars effectively.”

The Apalachin Library is an excellent resource and a hub of community activity. Wi-Fi allows visitors an option to work or utilize the new computers at the library for research or job searches.
