The Tioga County Suicide Prevention Coalition, including the Mental Hygiene and Health Departments, are sponsoring a Community Support Fair on Wednesday, May 24 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., which will focus on suicide prevention. The event will be held on the second floor conference rooms of the Tioga County Human Services Building located at 1062 State Rte. 38 in Owego, N.Y.

The event is free and open to the public, and no pre-registration is needed. Several community agencies will be on hand to provide information and resources, such as Social Services, Mental Health, Rural Ministry and A New Hope Center, among others, along with special guests.

“There are eight to nine suicides per year in Tioga County,” shared Heather Morgan, Tioga County Public Health Program supervisor.

Morgan explained that the fair will help increase awareness about suicide prevention and provide education, as well as offer the public an opportunity to meet agency representatives.

A free Question-Persuade-Refer (QPR) training, otherwise known as the “CPR for suicide prevention,” will be offered at two sessions; the first is planned from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. and the second is planned from 3 to 4 p.m. The QPR training will assist individuals in recognizing if someone is suicidal, how to help prevent it, and where to seek help, among other information.

Individuals attending the fair can put their name into a drawing to win a tablet, which is being offered as a door prize.

The Tioga County Suicide Prevention Community Coalition consists of multiple representatives from schools, county and government groups, non-profit agencies and clergy, among others.
