The Tioga County Master Gardeners planted a white oak tree at the demonstration gardens at 56 Main St. in Owego to celebrate Arbor Day on April 28. White oak is a keystone species that supports a wide variety of butterflies and birds.

Barb Neal, CCE Tioga Horticulture educator, states that planting a white oak is one of the best things you can do to improve the environment – the tree will provide habitat, food, shade and beauty for decades.

The Southern Tier Nursery and Landscape Association donated the white oak tree to the Master Gardeners. Assisting Barb Neal was Master Gardeners Paula Carman and Gail Lawson, as well as Agriculture Development Educator Margaret Ball.

The Master Gardeners made a short film clip about planting the tree. It goes through the planting of a bare root tree, step by step. You can see the clip by visiting the Tioga County Master Gardeners on Facebook.
