Eagle Court of Honor held for Michael Heffernan

Boy Scout Troop 38 recently presented an Eagle Court of Honor for Michael Heffernan. The Eagle is the highest recognition that Scouting offers to Scouts. It is earned through the advancement program, and only a small percentage of boys who begin in Scouting receive this honor. The wearer of the Eagle award is the epitome of Scouting’s best efforts and beliefs.

Michael Heffernan started in the first grade as a Tiger Scout in Pack 566 in Tennessee with a group of friends from school. This gave him a new activity to do with his friends. Here he learned about the rank of Eagle and was set on earning it.

From Cubs Scouts he joined Troop 96 where he continued on his journey towards Eagle. There he fit right into the troop and found a love for the great outdoors. Michael went on numerous high adventure campouts, but nothing like what he would do later in his scouting career.

In early 2011, his family moved to New York where he went on his search to find a troop that fit his ideas of scouting. In the fall of 2011, Michael joined Troop 38 in Owego. Here he was accepted as if he was there from the beginning.

In 2013, Michael was part of the crew that went to Philmont Scout Ranch n New Mexico. In 2016 Michael returned to the Philmont Scout Ranch with part of his troop. Being that he was a veteran on this trip he was chosen to be the Crew Leader.

Many of his summers were spent working at Camp Barton as a handicraft instructor. Here he helped young scouts earn merit badges that would also put them on their path to Eagle.

Throughout his years in the troop he has held various leadership positions that included Patrol Leader and Senior Patrol Leader, and in his waning months as a youth in the troop an Assistant Senior Patrol Leader.

In the fall, he will be attending SUNY Broome where he will be studying Software Engineering.

For his Eagle Project, he built a handicap ramp in the Emporium of the Elks club. Heffernan extends his thanks to Tim Sayers, Mr. and Mrs. Scheuerman, his Uncle Carl Mosher, his grandfather Carl Mosher, his brother Sean and his fellow scouts.
