Congratulations to our Socialist New York Government!

Dear Editor,

Congratulations to our Socialist New York State government for passing free college tuition. Once again the government will collect from all of us and then decide how they are going to spend and redistribute our money.

I would like to know if the Socialists plan on reimbursing those of us who saved and sacrificed so we could pay for our children to go to college. I would like to know if the Socialists plan on reimbursing those who have taken loans to pay for college and have either paid them off or are in the process of doing so.

The wise Margaret Thatcher once said that the problem with Socialism is that eventually you run out of everyone’s money.

My hope is that New York someday returns to a Democratic mind set and works to decrease government involvement in our lives, lessen the financial burden on all of us with any type of “free” programs which are no more than Socialist redistribution of taxpayer dollars with no say in how it is spent.

Sincerely,

Rance Brode

Owego, N.Y.

I’m a senior at Owego Free Academy who is experiencing the transition to college first hand, and I can tell you, this bill that was passed is really not what it seems. I think you’re greatly overestimating the amount of money being spent here.

As for me, after all is said and done, this will only save me roughly $2,000 out of roughly $25,000 of expenses for a year at a SUNY school- I have received much, much, more from financial aid and other scholarships. Many other students are considered ineligible and will receive nothing.

This is because the bill, called the “Excelsior Scholarship” is only applied after all other scholarships. The in-state tuition for a SUNY school is actually pretty small- about $6000 depending on the school. Most students will recieve some scholarships, covering part of that, and the Excelsior Scholarship will just cover the few thousand dollars that remain.

The bulk of the cost in-state for a SUNY school is living expenses, in my case running about $14,000 a year. This new bill gives no money for this, ever.

Students whose families make $100,000 or more are ineligible. Students that do not study full-time are ineligible. Students that are not in a 2-year or 4-year program are ineligible. Students who are not at a State University are ineligible. Students who do not maintain an adequate GPA are ineligible.

Additionally, every year that a student takes this scholarship is a year that they are required to stay in New York after college. So if I used this for all four years, I would be required to live in New York for four years. I’ve considered not taking the $2,000 because it will limit my options later in life, but I really need what I can get.

In conclusion, the fact that New York is offering a scholarship of a couple thousand dollars to certain eligible students hardly qualifies as Socialism. This bill will be a small help for students like me, but we are still struggling just as you did to cope with the cost of college.
