The station, which dated back to the 1950’s and its addition from the 1970’s, will be replaced with a new fire station on the same property. Demolition began on April 3. What has been a distinct fixture on Pennsylvania Avenue in Apalachin for more than six decades, the demolition of Apalachin Fire Department (AFD) station no. 1 started the week of April 3. Asbestos abatement was completed at the end of March.

With more than 100 years of volunteer service from generations of community members, replacing the original 1950’s station and its addition from the late 1970’s is bittersweet. A more modern station will bring a significant change to Apalachin’s landscape, and the memories left behind from the old station will be forever kept in the hearts of residents.

The first visible sign of progress occurred

in October 2016 when the vacant house located at 284 Pennsylvania Ave., adjacent land owned by the District on the south side of the property, was demolished.

Operations were relocated to the District’s two satellite stations; station no. 2 at 8924 State Rte. 434 (Tioga Terrace), and station no. 3 at 4283 Pennsylvania Ave. (South Apalachin). On-duty EMS crews are now located at station no. 2.

Substantial completion of the new station no. 1 is expected to be finished by mid-October.
