Although the worst of Super Storm Stella is over, with 31.2 inches of snow measured at midnight at the Binghamton airport, there is still more to go. Forecasters are predicting another 5 to 8-inches of snow, which means the area will have close to 40 inches of snow by the time the storm ends at the end of the day.

The storm began late Monday, and was widespread, affecting 15 states in the Midwest and northeast and resulting in shutdowns and closures of not only schools and highways, but also medical clinics and county and municipal office buildings.

In West Winfield, New York, residents there saw 41-inches of snowfall yesterday with Endwell not far behind, recording a total snowfall yesterday of 33.5 inches.

Stella has become the heaviest snowstorm on record in Binghamton, according to the National Weather Service, surpassing Winter Storm Argos in November.

Strong winds will continue today, and contribute to significant blowing and drifting snow from central Pennsylvania to northern New England.

Cold temperatures will continue through Thursday after Stella departs, making for icy conditions on untreated roads and other surfaces.

Six inches or more of additional snow is expected today from parts of northern Pennsylvania into western, central and upstate New York and the higher elevations of northern New England.

Although many of the travel restrictions have been lifted, lawmakers are urging caution when traveling today as the windy conditions and blowing and drifting snow will create hazardous conditions.
