Readers’ Column for the week of March 5, 2017

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

Has the Town of Spencer figured out how much the fire insurance rates will increase for the taxpayers of the Town if the Town of Spencer contracts with Van Etten instead of the Village of Spencer for Fire protection?

~

If anyone needs a transgender bathroom, all they have to do is go to Amazing Glass on East Avenue in Owego and rent one. Possibly Ms. Fink will sell you one or more if you wish.

~

Thank you for dividing the local comments from the political ones. I am so tired of both sides with their over the top comments. When I saw that it was political I skipped to the next one and hoped it was more reasonable.

~

In a seven to five vote, a life member was cleared of wrong doing for something that should have been 12 to 0. We still have problems with the fire board.

~

So now New York State wants to recall the open container law that has been so effective. Let’s have drunks rolling and puking in the streets again, which was the premise on which the law was passed in the first place. Now, if it will bring in a buck to the state in a license or sales tax, then let’s do it! BALDERDASH!

~

I’d like to know why county employees working in Owego village are allowed to park on the street when they have a designated parking area next to CVS. Downtown parking spaces should be reserved for people patronizing local businesses.

~

I really like the new format of this column, with the national political junk separated from the local comments.

~

Happy Tails Animal Rescue had a very good selling season out of its thrift shop and is looking for more clean / unbroken donations. The best items will go to the store; everything else will go to one of our many annual rummage or sidewalk sales. Books will go to our book sale this fall, if we can find a space for it. Shoes will go to either a rummage sale or a shoe drive. Items are tax deductible. Visit “Happy Re-Tails” on Facebook or call 687-2433 for questions or arrangements. Thank you.

~

If you feel you need to carry a weapon with you all the time, then please stay home. The unbridled fear of shopping Owego must be crippling. I have been going downtown for years without a worry. Always felt safe. So you should stay home hiding under your bed with the dust bunnies and smelly shoes. The rest of us will feel safer knowing you are not lurking around ready to shoot at your first feeling of fear.

~

Attention seniors, or anyone else who thinks that Craig’s List is the place to buy a good used car, beware – because the person who sold us a piece of junk was the most dishonest person I have ever met. You know who you are if you’re reading this. It was our fault for not checking the car out better and believing what you said, but you took advantage of a couple of trusting seniors and basically robbed us of our hard earning $1,300. We didn’t expect a perfect car, but really? A death trap that will never pass inspection no matter what! Why didn’t you list it for parts only? Well there’s a name for people like you – they’re called thieves. Anyway, enjoy your $1,300 you stole from a couple of hard working seniors just looking for a good used car. I’ll be sure and tell my friends about you. I would never be able to sleep or respect myself knowing I sold a car like that to anyone without being up front with him or her in the first place. It just shows what kind of a person you really are. Don’t worry; there is such a thing as karma.

Inquiring minds want to know and I never said I was smart; I was lucky. Where in God’s name are all these transgender children coming from? Do their mothers put it in their heads, or is it the water and bread we are eating? Did you notice you can leave a loaf of bread on your counter for over two weeks and it doesn’t get moldy! It gets a little crispy, but it doesn’t get moldy. It’s all these additives that these companies are allowed to put in our food to make their dollars stretch farther. So come on, write something in there for me so I will get a little smarter on this deal or smart at all. I’ve got to know, I’m getting too old to wonder. Thanks a million and have a great day. If you print this I’m lucky, I might learn something.

~

I just called in, and you know, I sat here thinking. Maybe it’s the drugs these mothers are putting in their bodies that are changing the hormones and the ability to childbirth in all this. I’ve got to know, write in please!

~

Great idea about closing Lake Street. Maybe it’s an opportunity for the village to consider closing it permanently as in the Ithaca Commons. It could bring a little change to our downtown Owego.

~

This is for the people who are having trouble with ticks. There is a collar made by Bayer call Seresto, which works for eight months. You have to order it online through one of the online pet companies. Hopefully this works for you.

~

Could someone please explain to me all the attention being given to the upcoming birth of a baby giraffe? Did I miss something here? Is it the first giraffe ever being born and nobody knows what one really looks like? I don’t get it.

As a long time resident and taxpayer residing in Owego, I feel I have a right to address a concern regarding the recyclable service, which is offered every Monday morning. We place our container at the end of our driveway as instructed each Monday morning. However, when we return home later in the day we find the container has been thrown and is laying in the middle of the driveway. We have to pull off the side of the road in front of our house, get out of our car, move the container, and then reenter the car before we can enter the driveway to our garage. I feel that this is poor service and it is dangerous because of the flow of traffic, especially at night. Can anyone of the readers help me with this situation and offer some suggestions?

~

I have six of the really long shutters like the old fashioned windows that I would like to give to someone if they could use them. Please give me a call at 659-3871; they’d be yours for free. They’ve been painted, but they’re still useable and in good condition.

~

If you google caregivers in Candor, N.Y. these people are limiting themselves by only listing an email address as not everyone has a computer. One search page lists 2,276 jobs in Candor, N.Y. That’s quite a stretch. You just can’t believe everything you read.

Looking to purchase a John Fogerty concert ticket stub. Call 659-3354 and leave a phone number.

National Political Comments

How to look petty, childish, and foolish all at the same time. If you watched the Trump speech Tuesday night and watched the Lib’s behavior, you have a very clear example, made worse by Chuck Schumer and his comments. Pathetic, at best. The public is growing tired of this childish behavior. It’s going to come back to bite them next election cycle!

~

Forgive me father for I have sinned. Wait a minute! Forget it; that was not a lie that I told, it was fake news.

~

I just don’t get it! U.S. Representative Tenney will not face the people she represents in a Town Hall meeting but has no problem taking an all expenses paid First Class trip to Afghanistan. What a crock! How much did that cost us taxpayers, Mrs. Tenney?

~

Why are we so focused on the welfare of immigrants, especially illegal immigrants while we ignore the care of our vets? On one hand we have heroes – on the other, criminals who broke our laws. We say Social Security is in trouble, yet we give illegal’s welfare, health aid, you name it. How about we take care of our citizens first?

~

Try to grasp this. It isn’t difficult. VOLUNTARY PRAYER IS ALLOWED IN SCHOOL. It is school- led or required prayer that is prohibited. And to answer your next question, it is because the U.S. Constitution says that the government cannot specify a religion. The same constitution you hold so dear on a different amendment.

~

My advice to the President – get a decent haircut, buy a suit that fits, and stop acting like a frustrated used car salesman!

~

I’m so sick of those brats whining Trump not my president. I didn’t act like that when Obama was president. I didn’t especially care for him, but I didn’t carry on like a nincompoop over him. You have to accept the fact that Trump is president. Now if they want to riot that is wrong, but if they protest they are free to do that. There is nothing wrong that.

~
Isn’t it wonderful that we don’t have a politician for a president! Just look at what the politicians have done for the country.

~

Socialist Democrats love to redefine words to their legal benefit. Swamps are called wetlands now and you better not disturb their legal caveats. Bums are called the homeless and enjoy special rights. Illegal aliens are called undocumented or dreamers and they too have special legal rights. How nice that all sounds. Sometimes I’m a dreamer and dream about not paying taxes or maybe dream about not obeying the speed limit, and sometimes maybe catching a nice trout without a fishing license. We are either a country of laws or not. You decide which one.

~

It’s only taken a month that Trump is going down. Vladimir Putin’s puppy, his favorite lap dog, his puppet is going down by way of cover up just like tricky Dick Nixon. It’s the cover up of the Russian stealing the election, putting in an illegal president in the White House. Donald J Trump is the big time loser, you can count on it, and you can take it to the bank. What else does he say?

~

This is in response to the moron who asked since when is Russia our friend? Duh, since WWII when they were our allies and helped win the war and we saved their butts. Get off the Putin crap. I think President Trump is smart to be friendly with them rather than be enemies, because if we took an unfriendly approach as you liberals suggest, they would kick our butts – period. I am proud to have voted for our new President, Donald Trump.

~

All you liberal traitors are doing a lot more to destroy this country than the Russians ever did or could. Stop the nonsense!

~

Today is Sunday, Feb. 25, and I’m watching the preview of the great American race, the Daytona 500. I just have to say with all of the talk about Donald Trump and his ties to Russia and all of his dealings with Russia and Putin, I’m wondering if it surprises anyone else out there that the great American race, the Daytona 500, uses an old Russian fight song to introduce the drivers. You’d think they could play an American song, but if anyone ever notices that, that song in the background is a military fighting song. Hey, I wish them all the best and drive out safely, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and the rest of them. Go America man, but we should change that song to make America great again.

~

I think it’s time to ban Hollywood. All they do is use their awards program as a political podium – instilling violence and division. Hollywood does not and never has influenced my thoughts and me. I can’t believe they think they hold such power! They need to stop flattering themselves. And how funny, it’s hilarious at the Oscars last night; they announced the incorrect movie as best picture. They can’t even get that straight and they think I would take political advice from them? As I started this conversation, I’m going to end it. It’s time to ban Hollywood; they don’t even deserve my time.

~

Is there really fire where there’s smoke? Why is the White House trying so hard to cut off investigations of Trump ties to Russia; especially as it leads up to the election of this 45th president? What’s going on? As Shakespeare said, “Truth will out”.

~

I could not believe what I read in this column about President Trump having no intelligence. I think it must be some Democrat who has the IQ of a frog and wishes he had just half of what President Trump has in money and everything. I wish I could be as dumb as him with all he has.

~

The House and Senate worked 101 days out of 365 days last year. The average Congressman or Senator, without counting committee money, makes $174,000 yearly; that comes up to over $1,730 a day. No wonder they like those lifetime jobs!
