Tioga United Way is looking for entries for their second annual adult spelling bee. The event will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, March 25 at the Owego Elks Lodge located at 223 Front St. in Owego.

The event is a fundraiser that helps to raise money for the 30 partner agencies that depend, in part, on the Tioga United Way to fund their programs and activities. The spelling bee also helps bring attention to one of the issues that Tioga United Way supports – Literacy.

“The Adult Spelling Bee is a lot of fun and it draws attention to the wonderful work of our partner agencies, including Literacy Volunteers of Broome and Tioga County,” said Carolyn Palladino, executive director of the Tioga United Way.

Groups of two to six individuals will comprise each team. Anyone wishing to enter a team can do so at tiogaunitedway.com or by calling the Tioga United Way office at (607) 687-4028.

The cost to enter a team is $100 and teams are encouraged to dress in costume. Anyone wishing to register a team must do so by March 10. Members of the public wishing to sponsor a team or make a contribution to the Tioga United Way can do so by calling the office.

Tioga United Way’s mission is to provide hope and opportunity for their community. The organization raises money to help support the needs of 30 partner agencies in Tioga County including A New Hope Center, ACCORD, the American Civic Association, the American Red Cross Southern Tier Chapter, Camp Ahwaga, the Community Care Network of Nichols, the Family Reading Partnership, Franziska Racker Centers, Literacy Volunteers of Broome/Tioga, the Salvation Army, the Tioga County Boys & Girls Club, Tioga Outreach/Catholic Charities, Waterman Conservation Education Center, Apalachin Youth Athletic Association, Baden-Powell Council Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways, Northern Tioga Youth League, Owego Gymnastics and Activity Center, Spencer Van Etten Youth Association, Allied Christians of Tioga, and the Spencer Van Etten Community Food Cupboard.
