Barton man wanted for Rape is arrested

On Dec. 11, 2016, at 1:30 a.m., the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office arrested Brian C. Smith in the Town of Barton, N.Y. There was an active Felony warrant issued for Smith after he was convicted in November 2016 for three counts of Rape in the third degree, class E felonies. 

The Sheriff’s Office received a tip concerning the whereabouts of Smith, and deputies determined that he had fled into woods near his residence at 1563 Halsey Valley Rd. in the Town of Tioga. Deputies apprehended him without incident. 

Smith was taken to the Tioga County Jail and is awaiting further court action. 

During the investigation following Smith’s apprehension, a person was arrested for allegedly providing criminal assistance to Smith prior to his arrest. 

Lori S. Chandler, age 50 of 1520 Halsey Valley Rd., Spencer, N.Y. was charged with Hindering Prosecution 3rd degree, a class A misdemeanor. Chandler was issued an appearance ticket and is due to appear in the Town of Spencer Court in front of Justice Lawrence Bleck at a later date. 

Tioga County Sheriff Deputies were assisted by members of the New York State Police in Owego and Chemung County during the search for Smith.
