Newark Valley Historical Society honored veterans of all Armed Forces from Berkshire, Newark Valley, and Richford with a baked ham dinner on Friday night at St. John’s Parish Hall.
Chairman of their Board of Trustees, Ross McGraw, extended the welcome. Rev.
Ben Baker of the Newark Valley Baptist Church delivered the invocation. The
Honor Guard of the Glenn A. Warner Post 1371 Veterans of Foreign Wars posted and retrieved the flags. Jim Raftis was Master of Ceremonies for the 10th annual event.
The Historical Society honored Newark Valley Boy Scout Troop 30 for the placement of hundreds of small American flags in the Town of Newark Valley and
Berkshire cemeteries. Scoutmaster Bill Knight accepted the plaque for “Flags
In” and said he and some of his Boy Scouts will attend Wreaths Across America’s “Flags In” ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery on Dec. 17.
Newark Valley Deputy Historian, Nellie Snapp, was recognized for spending countless hours compiling
and documenting information about the veterans of Newark Valley, Berkshire and Richford.
Vietnam Veteran and published author, Jerry Marsh, told of Tioga County soldier involvement in the Civil War. His research has identified 67 Tioga County
Civil War soldiers who died as Prisoners of War – 10 from Barton, six from Berkshire, 10 from Candor,
four from Newark Valley, seven from Nichols, 15 from Owego, two from Richford, three from Spencer and 10 from Tioga.
Honor Guard Dean Morgan shared highlights of the past year’s activities including services for 35 military funeral burials and the need for new members.
The Newark Valley Historians honored veterans with wall displays.
