Readers’ Column for the week of Nov. 6, 2016

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

What a joy to see homeowners dressed in costumes outside of their homes in the Village of Owego, welcoming children on Halloween. What a wonderful custom!

Congratulations to Bonnie Lee Kyle for being inducted into Country Music Hall of Fame on Sunday, Oct. 30. Truly a top performer and well deserved!

I just received my Pennysaver last Sunday and am reading this column. The item I am VERY interested in is the third one from the end. It speaks about donating stuffed animals, with a great many of them being Beanie Babies. I attend Owego Nazarene Church and we are involved with an on-going Crisis Care Kit project, which includes Beanie Babies. We are always on the lookout for them. I have tried several times to call the number listed and the operator comes on and says this is an invalid number. Can you please re-post your number? Thanks.

“As a power supplier, it is still reliant on coal and natural gas to serve customers, but it’s also one of the biggest renewable energy owners in the U.S. And as growth in the utility sector diminishes, we will likely see the move to renewable energy accelerate in coming years. At this point, moving into green energy isn’t a political or environmental move for these utilities; they’re buying renewable assets for the money. In short, Duke Energy is shutting down the dirtiest plants in its arsenal and replacing them with wind and solar. That’s a sign of where energy is trending today.” “Why America’s Dirtiest Power Companies Are Investing Billions in Clean Energy” — Travis Hoium, Oct. 29, 2016

Ulysses S. Grant on the Civil War: “One of the worst for which a people ever fought, and one for which there was the least excuse.”

Is there anyone who has something good to say? There must be something good to express.

Just a thought for the school districts – You have teacher’s appreciation day, school board appreciation day, bosses day, but do you ever think about having school bus driver appreciation day? Those people who transport your children to and from school, that has to be the babysitter, the coach, the mother, the referee and everything else in between. Just a thought for the school districts.

Is there someone out there that can do a little cleaning in my studio apartment? Please leave your number and your name in this column and I’ll give you a call back.

I’ve gone to many hometown parades for sports events and the streets were lined with people and supporters. This year let’s line the streets for our Veterans on Nov. 11 and show them how much we care for them and for what they have done for America and our way of life. This year, more than ever, America needs an uplifting event. Show your support.

I was just wondering, does anybody know out there if the drought is over? The newscasters on TV don’t mention a thing about it anymore. Are we truly away from the drought or is it still there?

Once again a utility company digs up a village street and then does a very poor job of repairing the mess. Their washboard repaving of Erie Street is a disgrace. How long will the narrow, one lane section near the Boys Club remain? Is there anything the Village can do to make them fix their mess?

Today at the Dollar General while getting my supplies I let a man go ahead of me because I had a lot of stuff to get through the counter. When he left he left $20 for me. It was such a big help and I was down and out this morning, so he made my day bright. God bless you and seven times more! Thank you so much!

Last week was a very different readers column, very bland.

I’m calling the day after Halloween, everything went good, took my kids around and everything was fine. One house, though, was disrespectful. I don’t know how you want to put it, maybe stupid that they had a person out there in a clown outfit with a baseball bat. As soon as they saw that, my kids said no and went on to the next house. That was very inconsiderate, considering all the stuff that’s been going around with clowns. But otherwise everything went fine.

I’m a working person who is up and going by 4:30 a.m. I’m way too tired to stay up much past 8:30. I would have really enjoyed the World Series game. Why are they on so late? What happened to these games starting at 2 or 3 in the afternoon as they did when I was a kid? Does anyone know why the times were changed. Interested in your comments.

When I first learned to cook and bake, the first thing I learned was to cover my hair with a hair net. I find it repulsive where all of today’s cooking shows have the cook’s hair flying around as they prepare their food. I just can’t watch them anymore.
