Veterans Day honors all who served

Many people confuse Veterans Day and Memorial Day. While those who died are also remembered, Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor all those who served honorably in the military – in wartime or peacetime.

In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank living veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served – not only those who died – have sacrificed and done their duty.

Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle.

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month (Friday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m.), Owego and Tioga County will observe Veterans Day at the Tioga County
Veterans Memorial, Civil War Medal of Honor Memorial and Tioga County Civil War Union Memorial. All veterans and public invited.

Encouraging you to invite a veteran to school before Veterans Day. Show our veterans how much you value their service while inspiring our young people in all grades from kindergarten to college.

Ask basic questions to a veteran. When did you serve? Where did you serve? What was your primary job or role in the military? What do you remember or value most about your years of service? Do you have a story you would like to share?
