CCE Tioga offers cover crop workshops for farmers

Cover crops can offer great benefits on a farm by adding organic matter to soil, improving water-holding capacity, supporting microbial life, storing and releasing nutrients, and more. Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Tioga County offers two chances to learn about cover crops this fall.

On Oct. 19, farmer and cover crop expert Brian Caldwell will join CCE for a potluck and discussion on cover crop timing. Planting at the right time is crucial to gain benefits from cover crops, but can be challenging to fit into a crop rotation. Come talk with other farmers and gain some new ideas on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. at the CCE Tioga Office, 56 Main St., Owego.

The workshop is free, but please bring a dish to pass. Call (607) 687-4020 if you plan on attending.

Friday, Nov. 4 is the annual Cover Crop and Soil Health Workshop and Tour at USDA-NRCS Big Flats Plant Materials Center. There will be a field tour of cover crop demonstration plots, and presentations on cutting-edge cover crop research from Cornell, Penn State, and NRCS. The workshop has applied for CCA and DEC pesticide credits.

CCE Tioga is organizing a carpool over to the workshop from Tioga County. To join the carpool, call Margaret Ball at (607) 687-4020. For general information on the event, call Paul Salon at (607) 562-8404, ext. 103.
