Good Shepherd to provide new level of care through enhanced facility for seniors

Extensive renovations at the Good Shepherd Fairview Home have created a new level of care for Binghamton senior citizens. The newly established Enhanced Assisted Living wing on the third floor can accommodate a more acutely ill resident and delay the need for skilled nursing home placement.

All independent living apartments were completely renovated to include seated showers in every unit, new cabinets, carpeting, floor tiles, windows and heating units.

“Good Shepherd has always prided itself on creating spaces that make residents feel at home. Now we can keep our seniors comfortable where they live as long as possible, allowing them to delay or in some cases avoid skilled nursing home placement altogether,” said Michael Keenan, president and CEO of Good Shepherd Communities.

Enhanced assisted living will also save residents, Broome County and the state of New York the costs associated with Medicaid subsidies often needed to cover the expense of skilled nursing.

William H. Lane Incorporated served as the Construction Manager for the project, which also created additional dining and recreational space designed specifically with a more acutely ill resident in mind. A new library was built, WiFi installed throughout the building, and cosmetic upgrades of new carpeting and paint completed. Infrastructure upgrades include a new generator, boilers, windows, roof and heating system.

“Perhaps the most obvious improvements to those passing by are the beautiful new outdoor spaces that Lane created,” said Keenan, adding that an outdoor amphitheater, gazebo, waterfall with bridge, walking paths with new furniture and plantings were also added to the property as part of the renovation.
