The VFW Post 1381 recently honored two of its longtime members who departed the area to return to New York City. David and Yolanda Dunajecz were honored for their years of dedication and service prior to their departure.

The post honor guard recognized David with a plaque for his years of dedication to the post and his Chaplain services, and Yolanda for her support of veterans.

Of Hungarian ancestry, David was born in 1921, and served in the U.S. Infantry in Southern Europe during World War II.

David retired from a career as a lead machinist at two New York Daily News printing plants in Manhattan and the Bronx, and then moved to Newark Valley in 1996. David became active in the VFW Post 1371 that same year.

David became Post Chaplain in 2004, and then Chaplain of the Post Honor Guard at approximately the same time. Yolanda joined under David, and this year marked 20 years of continuous membership.

David served from 1944 to 1945 in the European Theater, and was recommended for membership by original Treasurer Vivian Cotter.

Yolanda became active, and served as Poppy Chairman for the VFW. According to VFW members, Yolanda was the best Poppy Chairman they ever had.

Yolanda was also active in parades, participated in honoring members on Memorial Day, assisted with Bingo, and enjoyed playing cards with members following conferences and meetings. The VFW described her as “very sociable”. When Yolanda lived in New York City, she taught youth in a head start program and was loved by all of them. She retired after 25 years.
