The Owego Rotary Club is proud to invite the community to join Tri-Cities Opera (TCO) General Director Susan Shiplett Ashbaker on Feb. 2 as she takes guests “Behind the Velvet Curtain.” There will be myth busters, insider scoop about the lives and careers of singers, TCO tidbits and season highlights.

Joining Ashbaker will be tenor, Jordan Schreiner, who recently sang the role of Vaudemont in Iolanta with TCO.  Schreiner is a favorite Owego tenor.

Recently appointed General Director for Tri-Cities Opera, Ashbaker brings with her over 30 years of experience in the performing arts. She is active in the opera and vocal world as an artistic advisor/consultant, master class presenter, lecturer, and an opera/vocal coach.

Ashbaker was affiliated with the Opera Company of Philadelphia for 16 years, leading the casting practices and reestablishing the Company as a pioneer in identifying and offering opportunities to young singers before they achieved national or international recognition. In addition, she has worked as assistant conductor and vocal coach with the New York City Opera, European Center for Opera and Vocal Arts (Belgium), International Vocal Arts Institute in Tel Aviv and Montreal, Theater am Goetheplatz (Bremen, Germany), the Academy of Vocal Arts, and was on the faculty of The Curtis Institute of Music from 1993-2010. Ashbaker is an Adjunct Professor at Westminster Choir College of Rider University.

Joining Ashbaker will be tenor Jordan Schreiner. Schreiner, a Master of Music in Opera student at Binghamton University, associated with the Tri-Cities Opera, is a graduate of OFA and is much loved in Owego. In April Schreiner will appear as Tobias in Sweeney Todd.  He has appeared in Binghamton University performances as Bardolpho in Falstaff (scenes), Don José in Carmen, Judge Danforth in The Crucible and Lennie in Of Mice and Men (scenes) and in Mansfield University Opera Theater as Frederic in The Pirates of Penzance, and Martin in The Tender Land. He has been awarded 1st place winner, Eastern Regional NATS competition at Hofstra University (2014); 2nd place winner, Regional NATS competition at Ithaca College (2013); and Winner (2013), Semi-Finalist (2012), NATS Allegheny Mountain Chapter.

The public is invited to the Owego Treadway Inn on Feb. 2 for this program. Cocktails will be available at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 6:30 p.m., and the program will begin at 7:15 p.m. The cost is $15.00.
