Names of Purple Heart recipients needed

Attention Tioga County veterans. If you are a proud recipient of the Purple Heart Medal, please identify yourself as part of the process for Tioga County to become a Purple Heart County.

The Purple Heart is awarded to any member of the Armed Forces wounded or killed, died as a result of a wound in battle, or otherwise designed by the President of the United States.

Names of Purple Heart recipients are needed now for two important reasons: 1) to be included in the process for Tioga County to be designated a Purple Heart County and 2) on Aug. 7 to do our patriotic duty to remember and recognize those people willing to serve our country, no matter what the price.

Report names and appropriate information of every Tioga County veteran awarded the Purple Heart Medal for injuries sustained in battle against enemy forces to Glenn A. Warner Post 1371 Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Day Chairman Jim Raftis by email to jraftis2@stny.rr.com.

Eagle Scout Project

From 65 Tioga County cemeteries, 5,000 lines of veterans’ information must be entered into a database so results can be published, updated, and searched to select data such as Purple Heart Medal recipients.

The printed copy becomes the prime source of information for the annual Roll Call of Honor for Tioga County veterans and read Memorial Day morning at the Tioga County Veterans Memorial.

Anniversaries

This year America marks the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War, the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, the 65th anniversary of the start of the Korean War, the 40th anniversary of our departure from Vietnam, and the 25th anniversary of the Gulf War. Readers are invited to share their stories in their own words.
