Senator Libous: Time to Keep the Cap!

The Senate recently voted 47-13 to make the 2 percent Property Tax Cap permanent.

I wasn’t in Albany due to my recovery from back surgery but I would’ve enthusiastically provided the 48th vote to keep the Cap.

It’s been one of my top priorities this year. And it was one of your top priorities too since 77 percent of you supported it in my recent Pocketbook Survey.

I originally voted to create the Cap back in 2011.

Since 2012, the vast majority of our school districts and municipalities have kept spending increases below the Cap.

Recent reports estimate that taxpayers have saved $7.6 billion statewide over the past three years thanks to the Cap.

I know some school districts still struggle with the Cap. That’s why I supported a $1.4 billion school aid increase in this year’s Budget.

Before our 2015 Session ends soon, the Assembly needs to join the Governor and Senate by voting to keep the Cap.
