On Wednesday, Nov. 12, over 100 potential jurors were called to the Tioga County Courthouse in Owego, N.Y. for the jury selection in the trial of 62-year old Douglas Every, who is alleged to have murdered 39-year old Milton Jump, who shared a residence with Douglas Every on Thorn Hollow Road in Tioga Center, N.Y.

Douglas Every, who has served as a local realtor in the area for many years, was indicted earlier in the year by a grand jury for murder and evidence tampering.

After a plea of not guilty, a trial was ordered, and Nov. 12, 2014 marked the beginning of the process to include the jury selection, and then a subsequent trial on the alleged charges.

According to the court, the trial is anticipated to span over a period of seven days, and possibly longer. As of the end of the day on Nov. 12, only seven of the projected 12-jurors, and several alternates were seated for the case.

Jury selection in the case is expected to continue at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13, at the Tioga County Courthouse located in Owego, N.Y.

Some of the questions fielded to potential jurors included any, and all relationships with the defendant or prosecutor, District Attorney Kirk Martin; relationships to any of the over six investigators working on the case; and any additional information they may have obtained outside of news sources regarding the case.

Potential jurors were also questioned if they understand the difference between anger versus violence, and if they could come up with a verdict that was strictly based on the judicial laws.

According to Tioga County Sheriff investigators at the time of the incident, which occurred on Oct. 23, 2013, Douglas Every made a call to 911 in the early evening hours. When officers arrived, according to investigators, Douglas Every was standing outside the Thorn Hollow Road home, and Milton Jump was found deceased in the kitchen from a knife wound.

The evidence tampering charge alleges that Douglas Every tried to prevent blood and/or DNA evidence from being lifted off the knife used in the alleged stabbing, according to the indictment.

Douglas Every has remained free on $225,000 bond, and if convicted of the second degree murder charge could face 25 years to life in prison.
