United Way a good investment in your community

Dear Editor,

Many members of the community are aware that the United Way is in the midst of its fall campaign. With donations from our community, the United Way funds local food pantries, senior centers, families in crisis and programs for youth.

We are grateful to those who have been long standing contributors and lent their support to 33 member agencies in Tioga County. This fall the United Way reached out to our local farm community to enlist their support. Applegate Orchards, Iron Kettle Farms, Engelbert Farms, Maple Tree Gardens, Stoughton Farms and Our Green Acres all participated in “Live United at the Farm” throughout the month of October. Each made their own contribution to the campaign and placed donation jars near registers so customers could do so as well.

They provided information on the United Way sponsored FamilyWise discount prescription program, supported by many local pharmacies. It was a pleasure to work with these farm families who are deeply rooted in our community and to learn more about these businesses that provide fresh produce.

Farms operated by original owners, their children, and even their stands and farmer’s markets participated. They often contribute food to local churches and charities.

Many of these farms provide venues and promote tourism in our area. They have an outreach beyond Tioga County and New York State. Hayrides, fall displays, mazes, a trip along the cheese trail and fresh food drew many to our region and provided a boost to the local economy.

Thank you to these and the many businesses in our area that embrace the logo, “Live United”. I hope you will consider your own contribution to the United Way, a donation that stays local.

Sincerely,

Connie Sternberg
