A new bottle and can redemption business, Shelly’s Redemption Center, opened on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014. Located at 3158 Rte. 17C in Tioga Center, N.Y., Shelly’s Redemption Center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Customers who bring returnable cans and bottles to Shelly’s Redemption Center will receive five cents for each bottle and can. Owner Shelly Forrest explained that customers will find it easier to manage returnables this way.

“You don’t have to stand at a machine and do it yourself,” she said. After a quick wait while bottles and cans are counted, customers are then paid promptly in cash.

Conveniently located in Tioga Center with a sign at the entrance, Shelly’s Redemption Center is near Interstate Auto Parts. Shelly explained there is plenty of parking at the business, too, and the business is accessible for disabled persons.

“I am also glad to help people who need assistance,” Shelly added. Customers who need extra help can ask Shelly to retrieve their bottles and cans out of their vehicle while they wait.

One reason Shelly decided to start the business is because she felt there was a need for a redemption center in the Tioga Center community. Otherwise, the closest redemption centers, Shelly noted, are in either Waverly or Owego.

After working several years at a local manufacturing company, Shelly started seriously thinking about self-employment, and saw the redemption business as a good opportunity.
