The school district is living beyond its means

Dear Editor,

To the person on East River Road in Lounsberry within the O.A. school district that commented in the Sept. 28 column, let me say that if there were more people like you the world would be a better place.

They told you what to expect in the way of a school tax increase and you planned accordingly. When the tax time came you were prepared to pay a modest increase. That is the way it should be.

I suspect that the politicians and local officials knew how much the new elementary school would cost, and that not as much of that cost might come from the state as they hoped for. But if they had told you that and how much more we in the school district would have to pay – then they would not be re-elected.

The school district is living beyond our means and it has caught up with them, but it is not only them. It is all of us.

Just read a newspaper and you will know that with a few exceptions the whole world is living beyond its means. That includes our cities, villages, towns, counties, states and the country.

Sincerely,

Karl Tiemann

Owego, N.Y.
