Gold Star Mother’s Day is Sunday

Gold Star Mother’s Day is SundayWe Americans do a pretty good job of remembering and honoring the service personnel who made the supreme sacrifice in our country’s wars, but few ever think of their families, or know the last Sunday in September is designated “Gold Star Mother’s Day.”

In World War I, families who lost a member in battle put a gold star in a widow of their homes. In 1936, a joint resolution of Congress designated the last Sunday in September as a holiday to honor their sacrifice. Although it emphasizes mothers, the day honors entire families.

Recognition has also been made through the issuance of a gold star postage stamp and some license plates. Many family members wear gold star lapel pins.

Veterans and their Ladies, Men’s and Son’s Auxiliaries from throughout Tioga County urge everyone to remember these gold star families in your prayers, and if you know any personally, reach out and thank them for their sacrifice.

Sunday church services locally would be an excellent time to honor mothers who have lost a son or daughter who made the ultimate sacrifice as well as their families.

A presidential proclamation calls upon all to display the American flag as an expression of the love, sorrow, and reverence of the people for the Gold Star Mothers.
