On Friday, Sept. 29, Secretary of the Navy, Richard Spencer, visited Lockheed Martin in Owego, N.Y. for a tour of the facility. Secretary Spencer flew into Binghamton for what Lockheed officials called an unprecedented visit, and was then flown to Lockheed in the Navy’s combat helicopter, the MH-60R.

Secretary Spencer was able to witness, first hand, the performance of the MH-60R, manufactured at the Owego plant.

In June 2017, President Donald Trump nominated Spencer to serve as the 76th United States Secretary of the Navy. Spencer was sworn in on Aug. 3, 2017.

The stop at Lockheed Martin in Owego, according to a news release put out earlier in the day by Senator Charles Schumer, was a coordinated effort that would allow Secretary Spencer to visit the defense plants in Schumer’s district.

The former Marine, now in his second month as Secretary of the Navy, addressed the Lockheed Martin employees in attendance, as well as ROTC students.

“We are not at war,” said Secretary Spencer to those who gathered for his visit, adding, “but we are at full-fledged combat. You help keep us safe.”

Marillyn Hewson, chairwoman, president and chief executive officer of Lockheed Martin Corporation, introduced Secretary Spencer, describing him as a “staunch advocate for the marines.”

Hewson added, in honor of Secretary Spencer’s visit, a patch he signed prior to the conclusion of the brief introduction and ceremony.

Secretary Spencer concluded, “You all are making the products that are helping us deliver the fight.”
