607 Grappling, a veteran-owned martial arts academy located in Endicott, will host a free Memorial Day Community Open House and Fundraiser benefiting the We Defy Foundation on Saturday, May 30, from noon to 3 p.m.
The event will take place at 607 Grappling, 311 Exchange Ave., Endicott, N.Y. 13760. (Same building as Binghamton Yoga, bottom floor.)
The fundraiser is open to the public and will feature gym tours, demonstrations, community engagement opportunities, donations benefiting veterans, and a substantial door prize giveaway. No martial arts experience is necessary, and attendees do not need to be present to win the giveaway.
The event aims to raise awareness for the We Defy Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides combat veterans coping with military-connected disabilities a long-term means to overcome their challenges through Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and fitness training. The organization offers scholarship opportunities for qualifying disabled veterans across the country.
607 Grappling is currently the only officially approved We Defy Foundation training facility in the immediate area.
“This is bigger than martial arts,” said Kyle Mills, owner of 607 Grappling and a United States Air Force combat veteran. “This event is about bringing the community together, supporting veterans, and helping people understand that there are healthy outlets and strong support systems available locally.” He added, “Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu changed my life – it became my therapy after returning from a deployment to Iraq, and organizations like the We Defy Foundation help provide that same opportunity to other veterans.”
The fundraiser follows Military Appreciation Weekend at the Binghamton Rumble Ponies baseball team, where Mills will also participate in pregame activities, throw out the first pitch, and help distribute information about both the event and the We Defy Foundation to attendees throughout the evening.
In addition to supporting veterans, 607 Grappling offers discounts for active military, veterans, educators, law enforcement, and first responders as part of its ongoing commitment to community involvement in the Southern Tier.
