Dozens of families waited in line outside the Elk’s Club in Owego Saturday, Nov. 9 to get some festive photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus during the annual Holiday Showcase event, hosted by the Historic Owego Marketplace.
Designed to give families an opportunity to get photos with Santa and showcase local Owego businesses, many families were more than happy to brave the cold for the event.
“We came to see Santa, this is our second year and this is a good family day,” said Gina Chase of Apalachin.
Chase, who was there with her two daughters and husband, asked her girls if they were excited. After a moment of shy silence, both said they couldn’t wait to meet him.
Wendy Lundy came with her whole family and said that while it was her first year she was very excited for her grandson to meet Santa.
“It’s a little cold, but it’s great for the whole family,” Lundy said.
Along with Santa there was live music and games.
Bradley Crews, president of the Historic Owego Marketplace, said they host the event to offer local businesses a chance to show off what they have to offer.
“The merchants will tell you it’s one of the busiest shopping times of the year; it helps kick off the holiday season,” Crews added.
To help boost sales, Crews said many businesses were offering special sales during the event. He added that along with the Elk’s Club, who donated the room for pictures with Santa, the Floyd Hooker Foundation helps to fund some of the activities.
