Dave Talcott from Owego qualified for his fourth Olympic Trials event last Sunday in Hauppauge, Long Island. Racing the longest contested foot race in the Olympics, the 50 kilometer (31.1 miles) race walk, Dave clocked an impressive 5:07:26, the fastest time ever for a 59-year-old man in the U.S., also known as a single age best.

His time put him well under the qualifying time of 5:15:00 to rank him among the top American athletes who will be vying for a trip to Tokyo for the 2020 Olympics. Dave also qualified for the 50K Olympic Trials in 2012 and 2016, as well as the 20K Olympic Trials in 2016.

Dave has had the top 100-mile time for walkers in the world for 2017 and 2018.  That’s right, no one, in 2017 or 2018 walked faster than him at any age anywhere in the world for 100 miles. Both years he went under 19 hours, an incredibly impressive feat. Dave has consistently been among the top American race walkers at any distance and any age and one of the top masters race walkers in the world. He currently holds 14 U.S. records at distances ranging from 3,000 meters (a little less than two miles) up through 100 miles.

Born and raised in Owego, Dave attended OFA where he first learned to race walk in 1978. He qualified for the New York State High School meet his senior year.  Since then Dave has been a staple of U.S. race walking, helping to teach and mentor many upcoming walkers by giving clinics at local high schools along with his wife Erin. Together they host annual events in Marvin Park.

In 2020 they will be hosting their event, Not Just A Walk in the Park, a 50 and 100-mile event that brings competitors from all over the United States and the world.

Dave and Erin will both compete at the Olympic Trials in Santee, California on Jan. 25, 2020.
