Fifty-eight-year old Braunbeck, a graduate of Tioga Central Schools and former assistant wrestling and football coach, suffered extensive injuries from an accident on July 1. Braunbeck was working on the roof of a barn when he slid from its 19-foot high peak and propelled some 15-feet out.

Braunbeck’s fall resulted in several broken bones, which includes both legs and right hip. In addition, Braunbeck suffered a shattered right ankle and left knee fracture.

Since the accident, Braunbeck has had a right hip replacement. External fixators were attached to both legs until he had a surgery on his right leg. He currently has a steel plate in his left knee.

Unable to bear any weight on either leg at this point in time, Braunbeck is mobile via a wheelchair. As he continues the journey of healing, Braunbeck explained that several more surgeries would be necessary.

Braunbeck attends physical therapy three times each week, and aqua therapy sessions are forthcoming.

If all continues to progress well, Braunbeck said, “My doctor’s say that I may be able to bear weight on my right leg by December.”

After nearly 30 years in the construction field, Braunbeck enjoyed his work in the building trade, and where he worked in dry wall, concrete and painting.  Braunbeck misses the busy mode, and being off of his feet is out of his normal routine. It’s unknown if he’ll be able to return.

Braunbeck has faced other medical-related challenges, too. In 2013 he went through extensive cancer treatments. Now five years out, Braunbeck has regular check-ups and remains optimistic.

Today, Braunbeck said he is focused on “keeping a positive attitude” and not letting the current situation get him down.

Braunbeck added that he has been helped tremendously by the support of his family, including his wife, five sons and their families, along with his sisters.  They all play a role, he said, in his ongoing recovery.

The Sept. 29 benefit features a spaghetti and meatball dinner with salad and bread, along with tea and lemonade. A bake sale is planned, and guests will be able to participate in a Chinese raffle and 50/50.

Live music will be performed by local talents Christian Abell, from 1 to 2 p.m., followed by David Hildebrandt from 2 to 5 p.m.

The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children age six to 10; five and under are free.

Proceeds will help Braunbeck with various expenses. Donations are also being accepted at a Go Fund Me page, www.gofundme.com/f/george-braunbeck
