Write and Illustrate an Adventure at Candor Free Library

Candor Free Library is hosting a weekend “Write and Illustrate Your Own Adventure” workshop for young people on Sept. 14 and 15. The workshop will meet each day from 1 to 3 p.m. In the first session, participants will use story seeds to develop a main character and simple plot and begin writing their stories. The second session focuses on illustration, from traditional picture book styles to graphic novel.

“The workshop provides a supportive and encouraging place for young writers and artists to explore their ideas,” says local author, Sue Heavenrich. She teamed up with local illustrator, Johanna Husband to develop the program.

“Our goal is for young writers and artists to have fun without worrying about creating a perfect product,” says Johanna. She hopes participants will take home their drawing pencil and continue writing and drawing their stories.

The weekend writing workshop is free, and all materials will be provided. Space is limited, so please register at the library, or call (607) 659-7258.

Both Johanna and Sue are active members of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. Johanna has illustrated stories for children’s magazines and picture books; most recently W is for Waterfall, a Finger Lakes alphabet book by Aileen Easterbrook. Her artwork has been featured in local art shows, and can be found at Gallery 41 in Owego. Sue is known as a local journalist, and has written articles for a number of children’s magazines and a handful of nonfiction books for educational publishers. She co-authored Diet For A Changing Climate and has a picture book forthcoming.

This program is made possible by a grant from the Bernard Carl and Shirley Rosen Library Fund of the Community Foundation of Tompkins County.
