The Mayor of Owego, Mike Baratta, will cut a ribbon on Saturday, Aug. 31 to unveil Owego’s World Peace Bell at 100 Elm St. at noon. The bell will ring out every day at noon thereafter for world peace.
The bell to be introduced was cast in Troy, N.Y. in 1877 and was formerly used as a bell in the Towanda school system.
The Aug. 31 ribbon cutting will serve as a christening for the 1st Annual International Day of Peace Festival and “Stand for Peace” effort at the same location on Sept. 21, and on the grounds of the world’s largest, permanent organic peace sign on the planet.
The organizers are calling for all peace-loving villagers to attend the ribbon cutting and learn more about the bell, and for more details on the Sept. 21 event and the hopeful formation of the World’s Largest Human Peace Sign.
The organizers are also seeking volunteers for the Sept. 21 event. If interested, call (607) 687-2709 or find “Owego Schoolhouse Antiques” on Facebook.
