On June 6, 1944, Father Major Edward J. Waters, Catholic Chaplain from Owego, conducted Divine Service and celebrated Mass on a pier in Weymouth, England for members of the first assault troops thrown against Hitler’s forces on the continent.
Father Waters was the first priest in the Diocese of Rochester to volunteer as a chaplain. He served with the First Infantry through campaigns in North Africa, Sicily and across France to Berlin.
Father Eddie Joe came home and died of a heart attack while pastor of St. Patrick’s-Elmira. He was a proud Flat Rat and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Doty of Delphine Street and brother to the late Mrs. Peg Doty. Provided photo.
