On May 17, at the Bassett Ah-Wa-Ga Center in Owego, the first ever Roger Westgate Family Creative Arts Scholarship, one of many awards presented that day, was presented to Emily Henry, a graduating senior at Candor Central School.
Roger and Georgia Westgate congratulated Emily, presented a recognition certificate and a check for $500 from the Bassett Youth Foundation to be used to further her higher education.
Patti and Dan Halliday presented the second new scholarship to Kyle Pratt, a graduating senior at Newark Valley High School. This Halliday-Eaton Family STEM Scholarship honors Kyle for his achievements in science, technology and math, and provides him with a $ 500 educational award from the Bassett Youth Foundation to use for college. Congratulations to both students and their families.
May 17 was also a rewarding day for eight graduating seniors from Owego Free Academy. In a full morning of ceremonies at the Bassett Ah-Wa-Ga Center, Kira Krohmalney and Marcey Harrell received $500 educational awards for outstanding service to their community.
Louise Woodburn and her sons, David and Robert, presented the 2019 Louise and Robert Woodburn Family Scholarship to Kira for her tireless and selfless volunteer service to others.
Robert Bassett presented the 2019 David P. Beere Family Scholarship to Marcey for her generous and wide ranging community service.
Both students spoke at the ceremony and thanked the Woodburn and Beere Families for selecting and encouraging them and expressed appreciation to the Bassett Youth Foundation for making the scholarships possible.
Two more Owego graduating seniors were celebrated for their significant contributions to the arts. Andrew Clark was presented the 2019 Colleen and David Dewey-Wright Theater Arts Scholarship of $500 by David Dewey-Wright, and was thanked for the many diverse contributions he has made to the school performing arts program, on and off stage.
Robert and Joyce Merwin recognized Owego senior, Sasha Brady for her outstanding work in the fine arts. She received the 2019 Robert Merwin Family Fine Arts Scholarship of $500 to help further her development in painting and other mediums in college and later in life.
Concluding the May 17 morning ceremonies at the Bassett Ah-Wa-Ga Center was the presentation of the 2019 Bassett Family Scholarships to four graduating Owego students. Robert Bassett presented the Harriet and Charles Hibberd Bassett Scholarships to Grace Thomas and Summer Pierce. Both young ladies received recognition certificates for well-rounded developments and checks of $500 for their higher education.
Gavin Pritchard and Lewis Benjamin Race were then awarded the Robert Van Rensselaer Bassett Scholarships for academic achievement and service to others.
All of the eight scholarship recipients had the opportunity to speak and thank their parents and school mentors. They also received packets containing inspirational readings, ideas for tracing their own family history, and the Bassett Challenge to do a Senior Give Back of several hours of volunteerism in the community before they graduate.
Robert Bassett shared with all in attendance his father’s belief that, “To those much is given, much is asked.” Congratulations to all the students and their families.
