Umbrella Academy announces upcoming sessions

Topics cannot get much more diverse than Umbrella Academy’s upcoming programs. Founders Meisha Lohmann and Lisa Coniglio announce their schedule for the next few months, which will include something meditative, something ancient, something insightful and something practical.

Still located upstairs at the Coburn Free Library, at 275 Main St. in Owego, classes run every second and fourth Tuesday from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m.

On Tuesday, May 28, returning presenter, Yoga instructor Melissa Collins, offers “Better Living through Yoga and Ayurveda.” The ancient Eastern system of ayurveda and the philosophy of yoga can bring health and happiness to life. Collins will discuss how a lifestyle based on these practices can improve physical and emotional health.

On Tuesday, June 11, Dr. Judy Bjorkman will present “Digging in Syria.” A girlhood dream to go on an archaeological “dig” was realized in 1975 when Bjorkman went to Tell Hadidi, in central Syria. Located two hours east of Aleppo, the mound (tell) borders on the great Euphrates River. Both the excavation and the experience of living in this small rural village were as fascinating as Judy expected. She will show slides of the social life of these Syrian Arabs, offer stories of interactions with the Americans sponsoring the dig, and outline some of the dig results. In addition, a few comments on the history of Syria and its current difficulties will be offered.

On Tuesday, June 25, Binghamton University English instructor Dr. Meisha Lohmann will present “Canterbury Characters.” The enduring popularity of Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales is often ascribed to its rich characterizations. Come discuss the General Prologue and meet some of Chaucer’s most fascinating creations. If you would like to read the text before the talk you can access will be linked to Umbrella Academy’s Website, umbrellaacademy.org/index.html. Lohmann’s expertise is medieval literature.

On July 9, Kathleen Pernice will present on “Qualified Charitable Donations.” Pernice has been working in the financial industry for over 30 years. She will discuss some of the special rules regarding IRAs and how to best utilize them to your advantage. Highlights include using IRA distributions as a tax-free way to donate income to charities (without the need to itemize) and turning IRA assets into income.

Join the ever-growing number of participants at Umbrella Academy. All sessions are free and all are welcome. If you are interested in becoming a presenter, contact Meisha Lohmann at umbrellaacademytioga@gmail.com.
