Contradance to welcome Silver Lining

Contradance to welcome Silver Lining

Tioga County Contradance is pleased to announce its May Dance on Sunday, May 19 from 4 to 7 p.m. Silver Lining will be playing with caller Bob Nicholson.

The dance will be held at the Countryside Community Center, located at 9 Sheldon Guile Blvd. in Owego, N.Y. All dances will be taught and prompted before dancing begins.

Admission is $8 per person. Bring clean, soft-soled shoes. And remember to join them on the Tioga County Contra Dance group on Facebook.

Silver Lining — so-named as much for their sunny outlook as for their members’ ages — sings and plays an eclectic mix of Appalachian, Irish, Cajun, blues and improv, using a bewildering array of instruments.

Autoharp / harmonica / kalimba player Rick Biesanz, a mainstay of the local “Old-Timey” scene for many decades, was a founder of The Seneca Moon String Band in the mid-80s. Ed Kelce has been playing acoustic guitar since 1970 and has become accomplished at fiddle, mandolin, banjo and trombone. He currently plays and/or has sat in with many local groups including the Black Belt Blues Band, Seneca Moon String Band, and Springwater.

Jennifer Johnson, guitar, Native American flute, and hand drumming, has played for the High School Learning Center’s MMM&M Program for 10 years and for Rockwell museum events. Violist / violinist Emily Karr-Cook played for many years in chamber ensembles in southern California. Although she was “paper-trained” for 60 years, she is now discovering the joys of folk music and of playing by ear. Greg Grodem, who also plays with the Zydeco Trail Riders and Cayuga Blue Notes, adds southern spice to the mix with Cajun accordion and Delta blues on National steel guitar.

All are welcome to the event. For more information, call Dean Tholen at (607) 654-3185 or email to wynnyarrow@gmail.com.
