DRI recommendations submitted

At Monday evening’s Village of Owego Board Meeting, Rebecca Maffei, tourism director, and LeAnn Tinney, director of Economic Development for Tioga County, presented the final DRI recommendations to the state for further action and planning. The two gave a brief overview of their submission, and were available to answer questions.

According to LeeAnn Tinney, the total dollar amount for the projects submitted is $13.3 million; she noted that the state would cut this number to $9.7 million, just below the $10 million cap.

Maffei talked briefly about the projects submitted, noting that riverfront improvements downtown are included, such as signage and a kayak launch.

Other proposals include upgrades to Marvin Park, a marketing strategy for better signs and parking in the downtown district, a North Avenue Art Park in what they describe as “the pit” on North Avenue, improving downtown streetscapes and parking lots, and creating downtown revitalization funds.

Also in the proposal is the upgrade of sewer lines behind the businesses on Lake Street and flood mitigation guidelines, the repairing of lighting on the Southside and the downtown electrical system, restoration of the fire station on North Avenue, establishing a Gateway to Owego, the conversion of the Thompson’s Grocery site, the library, museum, and the Ti-Ahwaga Performing Arts Center.
