Tioga Downs held two recent job fairs, with the second taking place last week at the casino located on River Road in Nichols, N.Y. In a press release received earlier, officials stated they were hoping to fill over 80 positions, to include full-time, part-time, and seasonal.
The first job fair was held on March 23 at Tioga Downs, and welcomed over 40 applicants by mid-afternoon. According to Karen Shelp, director of Human Resources at Tioga Downs, the turn was good.
Shelp added that Tioga Downs currently employs over 700, and the addition of 80 jobs is significant as they gear up for the upcoming harness racing season, and fill additional positions due to the casino’s continued expansion.
“People are sometimes surprised at the types of jobs we have open,” said Shelp, noting jobs that range from blood sample collector in the horse barn to a small engine mechanic for the newly opened golf course.
Popular positions applied for, however, and according to Shelp, include security guard positions, janitorial, and food service.
“There was a mix of jobs being applied for; nothing is consistent,” Shelp added.
One applicant, Melanie, who chose not to reveal her last name, was at last Saturday’s job fair and was hoping to land a job as a cook.
“The job fair is an excellent opportunity,” said Melanie, adding, “I’m hoping for something, so we will see.”
