On April 13 and April 14, artist Mercia Stocking is teaching a folk art workshop, Crazy Quilt Sampler, at the Bement Billings Farmstead in Newark Valley. The workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Participants will see examples, learn history, and create a 6-inch square tablemat. Cotton pieces or scraps will be pieced together, then embellished and trim applied. Students will practice embroidery stitches for the decorative seams, and finish with a backer and edging.

Cotton is the best choice for this project because it is a user-friendly fabric. Although velvets and satins are also often seen in crazy quilts, those fabrics can be difficult to work with. Cotton will assist students to hold irregular shaped scraps together as they work.
